He was the court poet of the Fatimids, particularly the fourth calif al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh al-Fāṭimī. His father who was from a village near Mahdia migrated to al-Andalus. His ancestry can be traced back to Yazīd ibn Ḥātim al-Muhallabī, who was the governor of Ifriqiya on behalf of the Abbasids (155-171 H / 772-787 CE). The Andalusian period of his life is shrouded in mystery. He was harassed for his Shia beliefs in al-Andalus, which led him to leave for Ifriqiya (Mahdia) at the age of 27.
There, he became a panegyrist for the Fatimids, and an enthusiastic defender of Shiism. The fame of the panegyrics he wrote in honor of al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh spread as far west as Cordoba and as far east as Baghdad. He became renowned among his contemporaries and later generations, earning him the title of the ‘Mutanabbi of the West’. He died in obscure circumstances in Barqa in 362/973.
Ibn Hānī is considered the first great poet of the Islamic West, and the most important of the 4th century Hijri (10th century CE). He was also regarded as the most zealous Shia poet. Much of his poetry was in the form of panegyrics, characterized primarily by his praise of religious and political Shia tenets. His eloquence was renowned, surpassing that of his Levantine predecessors, such as al-Sayyid al-Ḥimyarī (died 173/789) and Diʿbil al-Khuzāʿī (died 246/860).
While his poetry is characterized thematically by loyalty to the Ismaili school, often carried to excess, stylistically it was conservative in terms of the general artistic architecture, particularly with regard to his lexicon and imagery. This conservatism has weakened the ‘Ifriqiyan’ and ‘Andalusian’ identity of his poetry, as the environment he depicts was 'imported through rote learning and knowledge acquisition' (bookish knowledge), according to the scholar Mohamed Yalaoui.
A second notable feature of his poetry is his depiction of the sea battles fought by al-Muʿizz against the Byzantines, especially during the struggle for Sicily. Here is an example of what he wrote on this subject:
“The third feature consists in what we might call the poetic imagination’s borrowing from doctrinal excess—by which we mean the unruly surge of poetic expression—especially imagery—echoing the unruly surge of sectarian thought.” This is perfectly expressed in his famous address to al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh: “What you will comes to pass, not what fate wills. Command: for you are the Unique, the Absolute Ruler”, a saying that was a boon for poetry, but not as much for religion.
They are the Shiite masters of Bakr, if they had to state their lineage.
You will not find a man of letters who is not a Shiite
Who has reformed the western Maghreb lacking morals and culture
If not Shiism and the upright faith?
In Yahya’s hand, a blade, shimmering and sharp.
Recognizing who al-Muʿizz was in truth, it converted to Shiism
The sword dripped on both sides, as if
Recalling the slain in Karbala, it wept.
Ships battling the boisterous seas,
Jet black against the whiteness of victory.
A fire is kindled; its flames deep red.
Swiftly they glide, dragging their tails in their wake.
