He was the court poet of the Fatimids, particularly the fourth calif al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh al-Fāṭimī. His father who was from a village near Mahdia migrated to al-Andalus. His ancestry can be traced back to Yazīd ibn Ḥātim al-Muhallabī, who was the governor of Ifriqiya on behalf of the Abbasids (155-171 H / 772-787 CE). The Andalusian period of his life is shrouded in mystery. He was harassed for his Shia beliefs in al-Andalus, which led him to leave for Ifriqiya (Mahdia) at the age of 27.
There, he became a panegyrist for the Fatimids, and an enthusiastic defender of Shiism. The fame of the panegyrics he wrote in honor of al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh spread as far west as Cordoba and as far east as Baghdad. He became renowned among his contemporaries and later generations, earning him the title of the ‘Mutanabbi of the West’. He died in obscure circumstances in Barqa in 362/973.
